Why East Los Angeles Homeowners Choose CertainTeed Roofing

Weathervane Roof Repair provides independent CertainTeed in Burbank and across East Los Angeles, covering everything from Landmark architectural shingle repairs to full Flintlastic SA low-slope membrane replacements. We’re not a CertainTeed dealer or authorized contractor – we’re a roof-only specialist that works with seven major shingle brands, and CertainTeed happens to be one of the three we see most often on East LA’s post-war tract homes and 1990s re-roofs. What makes our CertainTeed work different is simple: we read their product bulletins, install to their published nailing and ventilation specs, and know their fire-rated and SBS-modified lines by name. That familiarity is earned on local roofs, not from a vendor training binder. Call (877) 755-4274 for a free estimate on any CertainTeed roof.

Why Trust Weathervane Roof Repair for Your CertainTeed Roofing?

CertainTeed makes good roofing products. But a shingle is only as good as the roof it goes on, and in East Los Angeles, that roof has to handle brutal UV exposure, Santa Ana wind gusts, and the occasional wall of winter rain. Our crew has worked on enough CertainTeed roofs in the 90022 zip code to know exactly how each product line behaves after ten, twenty, or thirty years in this climate. We know which Landmark colors fade first on south-facing slopes. We know how X-Terior three-tabs tear when the tab seal fatigues. And we know when a Flintlastic roll is worth patching versus when it’s done.

Gil Tanner, our owner, grew up in the Montrose area of Glendale and cut his teeth on hillside homes and aging roofs before spending two decades working across East LA’s flatlands and foothills. He learned construction technology at Glendale Community College, then spent years alongside experienced roofers on everything from torch-down decks to clay tile on Spanish Revival homes. His rule is simple: “Tell me what the roof is actually doing, and I’ll tell you what it actually needs.” That’s the approach we bring to every CertainTeed inspection and repair.

We hold no authorization, partnership, or warranty endorsement from CertainTeed. What we hold is working knowledge of their products, earned hands-on. When you hire us, you get a straight answer about what your CertainTeed roof needs – and what it doesn’t.

Common CertainTeed Roofing Problems We Fix in East Los Angeles

After years of working on East Los Angeles roofs, we see the same failure patterns repeat themselves. Here are five CertainTeed-specific problems we encounter most often:

  • Landmark granule loss on south- and west-facing slopes. The Landmark line is a solid architectural shingle, but East LA’s relentless sun eventually breaks down the asphalt and lets granules wash away, exposing the fiberglass mat underneath. We regularly see edge and ridge caps go first after two or three decades of UV. By the time a homeowner notices bare spots in the gutter, the shingle is past its serviceable life on those exposures.
  • X-Terior three-tab tearing along the eave line. The X-Terior (XT 25) line is a budget three-tab that tends to tear along a ragged horizontal line a few inches above the eave. Wind-driven rain and sun fatigue the tab seal, and once the tear starts, it creeps. This is a common sight on East LA’s early postwar stucco boxes, especially where original 1990s three-tabs were never upgraded.
  • Presidential Shake moisture retention on shaded north slopes. The deep profile of Presidential Shake and Presidential Solaris shingles looks great, but on a shaded north-facing plane, that profile holds moisture and airborne debris. Moss and algae take hold, lift tabs, and eventually rot the deck beneath. In East Los Angeles, where mature trees shade many older homes, this is a recurring issue on luxury shingle installs.
  • Flintlastic SA blistering and lap failure on carports and back-kitchen roofs. Self-adhered modified bitumen like Flintlastic SA works well on low-slope decks, but it fails when originally laid on damp or dust-contaminated decking. We see blisters forming at laps and parapet terminations, and sections that never fully sealed. On East LA’s many flat carport and kitchen addition roofs, this is a frequent call.
  • Valley flashing fatigue on older Landmark installs. The woven valley underlayment on older CertainTeed roofs goes brittle after a couple decades of heat. Once cracks form, water works its way under the shingles at the valley and into the decking. We’ve fixed enough failed valleys on 1920s-1950s homes in East Los Angeles to know exactly what the repair should look like.

CertainTeed Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

When we repair a CertainTeed roof, we match the exact product line, color, and exposure already on the roof. If your home has Landmark Pro in Weathered Wood, we source Landmark Pro in Weathered Wood. If it’s a Presidential Shake install, we use the matching Presidential profile. That’s the only way a repair blends instead of reading as a bright patch.

We use OEM CertainTeed components where they’re the honest fix. When a color has been discontinued or a budget makes OEM impossible, we’ll use a clearly labeled quality aftermarket cap or underlayment – and we’ll tell you the tradeoff on the estimate before we start. No surprises. The bigger decision is repair versus replace. If the worn field covers more than roughly a third of the slope, or the decking is soft, we’ll recommend a full re-roof rather than a patch that buys you one more season. A repair that fails in a year isn’t a repair; it’s wasted money. Call (877) 755-4274 and we’ll give you the straight answer.

Our CertainTeed Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis first. We inspect the entire roof, not just the obvious problem area. On a CertainTeed roof, that means checking granule coverage on sun-exposed slopes, tab seal integrity on three-tabs, membrane laps on low-slope sections, and the condition of valleys, flashing, and ventilation. We’ll tell you exactly what your roof needs – and what it doesn’t.
  2. 2
Targeted repair or full replacement. If it’s a repair, we strip only the affected area, replace any failed underlayment or decking, and re-lay matching CertainTeed shingles to the correct exposure and nailing pattern. If it’s a replacement, we remove the old system down to the deck, inspect and repair the deck, install proper underlayment, and follow CertainTeed’s published specifications for nailing, ventilation, and flashing. Permits are pulled where county code requires.
  3. 3
Water-test and inspection. After any repair or install, we run a water test on the affected area and walk the entire roof to confirm laps, overlaps, and terminations are sound. If a permit was pulled, we schedule the county inspection and make sure it passes.
  4. 4
Warranty and documentation. We stand behind our workmanship with a written warranty, and we document the materials used so your CertainTeed manufacturer warranty stays intact. You’ll know exactly what was done and why.

  • Landmark architectural shingles – including Landmark Pro and Landmark Solaris. The most common CertainTeed product on East LA re-roofs, and the one we repair most often.
  • X-Terior / XT 25 three-tab shingles – the budget workhorse still found on many 1990s and early 2000s roofs in 90022.
  • Presidential Shake and Presidential Solaris – luxury architectural profiles that require specific repair techniques and careful matching.
  • Flintlastic SA self-adhered modified bitumen – the low-slope roll system used on carports, patio covers, and flat-roof additions throughout East Los Angeles.
